The European Commission has approved 232.5 million euro of public funding in Germany for a new research platform for nanoelectronic technologies. The platform is a joint project involving Infineon Technologies AG, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. The facility will be built in Dresden, and will involve two new research centres, where a series of collaborative research projects will be carried out. The Commission considers that the project will not harm competition, and is therefore compatible with the EC Treaty. 'I am pleased to approve aid which increases Europe's competitiveness in the field of nanoelectronic technologies, promotes innovation and at the same time contributes to economic development in an assisted region,' said EU Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes. The project will cost 700 million euro overall. The country's authorities hope to make the platform a third pillar of European research in the field of nanoelectronic technologies, alongside the French research organisation LETI in Grenoble, and the Belgian establishment IMEC in Leuven.
