French Government to launch roadmap on research infrastructures
The French Government has announced plans to draw up a roadmap for national research infrastructures. It will call on the scientific community and other relevant stakeholders to contribute to the process, identifying existing infrastructure projects and future needs. The country's High Council for Science and Technology will also provide input. Research infrastructures are large-scale facilities, major pieces of research equipment or databases and networks that help scientists in their work. Examples at a European scale include the European Extremely Large Telescope and a European icebreaker for Polar research. The Government says that the process will be complimentary to work undertaken by the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). In 2006, it produced a roadmap detailing 35 research infrastructures projects considered vital to the development of science and innovation in Europe. François Goulard, French Minister for Education and Research, noted that the roadmap was one of the strategic actions of the Government's Research Pact, which is aimed at giving the country's research new impetus.
