Hamburg in Germany is to host a new centre for pharmaceutical research, intended to fill the current gap between basic research and commercial development. Funding will come initially from the Government, city funds and pharmaceutical company Evotec. The centre is to be known as 'ScreeningPort', and will focus on identifying potential new pharmaceutical agents efficiently and systematically so that they can appear on the market faster as products. It will offer research establishments access to new technologies, as well as professional samples and data. The Government will fund the construction of ScreeningPort, as well as initial pilot projects when it is up and running. The centre is regarded as an important element of the country's 'Pharma-Initiative', launched in July by Education and Research Minister Annette Schavan. The Pharma-Initiative is intended to strengthen pharmaceuticals research in Germany, and to ensure that new and innovative treatments reach patients faster. The Government has put aside around €800 million for the initiative.
