The next closing date for the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) open call for proposals is rapidly approaching. Researchers wishing to propose actions that would contribute to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal development of Europe are invited to do so before 30 September. COST finances networking between nationally-funded activities. For example, it supports meetings, conferences, short-term scientific exchanges and outreach activities, all of which are known as 'Actions'. Grants usually amount to around €100,000 per annum for four years. The success of COST Actions can be illustrated by two recent awards for Best Paper at international conferences. COST Action 293 on graphs and algorithms in communication networks received the Best Paper award at the international Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) symposium in Helsinki in June. The winning paper describes how mathematical optimisation using predictions and measurements of signal quality can be used to improve the performance of wireless local area networks (LAN) in an office environment. COST Action 295, known as DYNAMO, received the Best Paper award at an annual symposium on parallelism in algorithms and architectures that took place in the US in June. The paper presents algorithmic models for analysing 'small world phenomenon' which states that short chains of acquaintances between any pair of individuals can be discovered in a distributed manner. Applicants for COST funding must be engaged in a research programme in an institution of a COST member state. COST is managed by the European Science Foundation (ESF) and receives funding from the European Commission under the research framework programmes. For further information, please visit: http://www.cost.esf.org/opencall
