New research institute for human and social sciences opens in France
The Institute of Advanced Studies in Human and Social Sciences, to be known as the Lyon Collegium, has opened its doors to applications with the aim of launching pioneering research and participating in the creation of a community of scientific excellence recognised internationally. The first researchers will arrive in September 2008. The Collegium belongs to the network on humanities and social sciences supported by the French Government, which also includes sites in Aix/Marseille, Nantes and Paris. According to its directors, the institute is unique in that it is oriented mainly towards the humanities and social sciences, but also open to the hard sciences. The Collegium is particularly interested in receiving researchers interested in topics addressing the 'major questions of our time'. Research conducted at the institute is expected to contribute to the design of public policies (urban policies, development strategies, sanitation policies, international policies). Researchers will be able to work on priority themes set by the institute, or on their own research programmes. They will stay at the institute for between five and 10 months.
