China overtook Japan and the UK to become the world's second most prolific producer of scientific research papers after the US in 2006, according to new figures from the Institute of Science and Technology Information of China (ISTIC). Chinese scientists published 172,000 papers in major international journals and meetings in 2006 - 8.4% of all papers published. China also climbed the citation rankings, increasing the number of cited papers first-authored by Chinese scientists by 25.3%. Here the country has only managed to climb to 13th position however. The number of Chinese papers published in international academic meetings increased by 15.8% in spite of a worldwide decrease of 9%. This suggests that Chinese scientists are increasingly working with counterparts from abroad.
