Austria's Minister for Science and Research, Johannes Hahn, has announced funding for research infrastructures and the social sciences, amounting to EUR 6.9 million in total. The largest chunk of the money will go to a new data processing centre for the analysis of data from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). The idea is that the new centre will provide Austria with access to the key technology for solving highly complex scientific and technological problems, while strengthening Austria's domestic research infrastructure in the field of 'advanced communication networks'. The new centre will make Austria the world's biggest nuclear research location, according to Mr Hahn. 'Without this centre Austria is practically cut off from active participation in the evaluation of the [CERN] data,' he added. Some 14 extra-university research institutes in the fields of the humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences will receive more than €1.4 million from the Austrian government. The selected institutes have excelled in a wide range of areas: they are carrying out important research and advisory activities for science and for policy-making, explained the minister. He added that he hopes the funding will enable young scientists to build up know how and a reputation in specific areas. The funding is provided through the government's 'Dynamic Quality Assurance' initiative.
