INTAS East-West cooperation in research and development
East-West scientific and technological cooperation has been given increasing emphasis during recent years. To meet the need for immediate action, INTAS was founded as a non-profit international association in June 1993 by the European Union. A brochure has now been produced outlining the scope of the INTAS programme, its aims and project areas, and a breakdown of its organizational structure. INTAS comprises the EU Member States, as well as Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. Its aim is to promote cooperation in research and technological development among scientists from the new independent states (NIS) of the former Soviet Union and Western Europe. INTAS mainly supports joint research projects and networks of scientists and research teams. Each project or network associates a minimum of two participants from Western Europe and one from the NIS. Projects are carried out in the fields of the exact and natural sciences, economics, and human and social sciences. Over 550 joint research and network projects have been selected by INTAS for a total funding of ECU 25 million. By the end of 1994 about ECU 50 million will have been committed, and over 1,700 NIS laboratories will have benefited from the INTAS programme.
