On 10-13 September 1994, Mr. Antonio Ruberti, the Commissioner responsible for research, education and training, visited Iceland. The aim of the visit was to strengthen the ties between the European Union and Iceland, particularly in the fields of research, education and training. Under the Second (1986-1990) and Third (1990-1994) Framework Programmes for research and technological development, Iceland participated in a number of projects in the fields of biotechnology, industrial and materials technologies, non-nuclear energies and marine technology. Since the entry into force of the EEA/EU Agreement, Iceland will now participate fully in the framework programmes. It is particularly interested in programmes in the fields of information technologies, the environment, marine sciences and renewable energies. In addition, Iceland has already participated in a number of Community programmes concerning education and training. Since the academic year 1992/1993, five higher education institutions have participated in the ERASMUS programme. With funding from the COMETT programme, a university/enterprise training association was created which aims at promoting the transfer of technologies within and to Iceland. Since the beginning of 1994, Iceland has participated in the Community's "Youth for Europe" programme, and Icelandic representatives have been invited, as observers, to the committees and working groups organized in the framework of the FORCE/EUROTECNET, PETRA and LINGUA programmes.
