The European Commission has published a call for tenders for support in the development of an instrument for fostering investment in clean technologies with allowances for the EU emission trading system. Cities and urban areas are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change because of their major infrastructure, population density and concentration of economic activity and services. The impacts of climate change will have very serious implications for cities in Europe. At the same time, these impacts are locality-specific. The central purpose of this contract is to provide capacity building and assistance for cities in developing and implementing an adaptation strategy. It should also raise awareness throughout Europe on the importance of preparing for climate change in cities, exchange knowledge and best practices, and develop tools and guidance for cities on adaptation. Currently, European cities seem to be in different stages of preparation for and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Some cities are very advanced in understanding and are already taking action. Others are still beginning. It is important that comprehensive adaptation plans are developed and implemented. These adaptation strategies should encompass not only short term needs reacting to the impacts of climate change as they materialise, but also the long term wider development needs. The Commission is developing an EU strategy on adaptation to climate change that will be adopted in 2013. This project will be a key input into the urban dimension of the EU strategy. It will provide information on the impacts and vulnerabilities, the knowledge gaps, the state of play on adaptation and capacities to respond and also strategies and options for adaptation in cities. To see the official call announcement, please consult: OJ No S 129 of 8 July 2011(opens in new window)
