The European Commission has published a call for proposals for the development of smart cities and communities. The call is part of the broader FP7 Cooperation Work Programme, which considers the development of smart cities as essential to address the innovation gap the EU is facing, build up the knowledge base and tackle the societal challenges facing Europe at large. It also comes as a follow-up to the European Commission's communication on this issue. The call consists of eight topics, half of which focus on ICT. The EC specifically looks for collaborative projects looking into a reliable, smart and secure Internet of things, energy-efficient data centres, optimised energy systems and integrated personal mobility. The other four topics are grouped together under the theme of Energy. They include network integration of distributed renewable resources, rules for linking electric vehicles to energy resources, interaction between grid infrastructure and electric vehicles, and, finally, optimised energy systems for high-performance energy districts.
