At the G7 summit on the information society on 25-26 February, Mrs. Emma Bonino, Commissioner for consumer affairs, presented to Members of Parliament and the press the "European Consumer's Guide to the Internal Market", the new information tool made available to consumers via Internet on the World Wide Web. The Consumer Guide was set up to provide EU citizens with an introduction to the single market in so far as it affects them as consumers. The Guide's role is to: - Explain the opportunities which the single market offers to consumers; - Warn them of the difficulties they may encounter; - Give them confidence by drawing their attention to the efforts made by the European Community, in terms of legislation, information and representation, to ensure that their interests are protected. The Guide, which is largely based on the text of EC Directives, covers a wide range of subjects from product safety and package travel, to medicines and unfair contract terms. It will initially be available on Internet in English only.
