The European Union has welcomed the accession of Chile to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Chile's decision was announced at the conference for the review and extension of the NPT held in New York on 11 May 1995. This confirms Chile's commitment to non-proliferation following its accession, in 1994, to the Treaty of Tlatelolco. Chile's accession contributes to the realization of the universality of the Treaty - an objective supported by the European Union and recalled in the decision taken at the NPT conference on 11 May 1995 to extend the Treaty indefinitely.
