Scenarios for the implementation of trans-European telecommunications networks
The European Commission, DG XIII, has published an open call for proposals for a study entitled "Scenarios for the implementation of trans-European telecommunications networks up to the year 2015". The aim of the study is to provide the Commission with a set of scenarios for the implementation of trans-European telecommunications networks up to the year 2015. The scope of the study falls within the framework of the proposal for a Council and a European Parliament decision on a series of guidelines for trans-European telecommunications networks. Scenarios will help the Commission to formulate appropriate actions under varying conditions to speed up the development of the European information society applications through stimulating the demand for, and the supply of, new services and applications, in accordance with Title XII of the Treaty. Based on the analysis of past and present situations in the Member States of the Union, the scenarios will describe different possible paths towards the introduction in Europe of advanced applications of the information society, especially those of collective interest, in association with the two other network components (services and physical networks). Trends and alternative scenarios will contrast possible evolutions of the economic, social as well as technological environment in the long term. They will be developed according to varying speeds of deployment of trans-European networks in terms of the degree of access, interconnectivity, interoperability and utilization across the Union.
