How can radar improve your sleep?

An EU-funded consortium dedicated to advancing machine vision has developed a range of applications that can monitor sleep, make public crossings safer, and help vulnerable adults live independently.

The EU-funded NextPerception project envisions intelligent sensing systems that operate securely and reliably. The consortium comprises 43 partners from seven countries and has dedicated efforts to enhance the features and elevate technologies like radar, LiDAR and cameras to new heights. The project has now been featured in the CORDIS series of explanatory videos titled Make the Connection. NextPerception has exemplified how innovative perception sensor technologies can revolutionise vital sign monitoring and behaviour observation. Applications included sleep monitoring, driver awareness measurements, and sensors to unobtrusively detect falls in vulnerable adults. “The innovations of NextPerception will provide new opportunities in health and well-being, especially for monitoring elderly people at home or discretely assessing their health,” says project coordinator Johan Plomp. ‘Make the connection with EU-science’ is a series of explanatory videos focusing on the scientific content and exploitation aspects of EU research projects.
