On 15 March 1995, the European Commission published a call for proposals for RTD actions in the area of scientific and technological cooperation with developing countries. This call comes under the specific programme for research and technological development, including demonstration, in the field of cooperation with third countries and international organizations, and covers the following specific areas: - Sustainable management of renewable natural resources; - Sustainable improvement of agricultural and agro-industrial production; - Health; - Information and communications technologies. Two separate deadlines were set under this call: - 15 June 1995 for projects on all aspects of human-vaccine-related research and on all aspects of livestock health research; - 6 September 1995 for projects on all other topics. First results are now available for responses received for the deadline of 15 June 1995. A total of 104 proposals were received. Of these 77 were eligible, 15 are to be evaluated in September and 12 were non-eligible. Of the 77 eligible proposals, 34 were in the area of human vaccines and 43 concerned livestock health. Approximately 50% of proposals were considered to be either very good (22) or outstanding (17). Participants in the eligible proposals were as follows: - Universities and institutes of higher education (210); - Research organisations (166); - Industrial or commercial enterprises (5); - International organizations (10); - Other (10).
