A Commission proposal for a Council Directive on the adoption of standards for satellite broadcasting of TV signals (COM(91) 242, submitted 15 July 1991), establishes the HD-MAC standard for any transmission of high definition TV. Member States shall support this standard with measures set out in the proposal. Transmissions of 625-line satellite TV services receivable on domestic equipment (even those intended for redistribution by cable networks) must employ the D2-MAC standard if the service is in 16:9 aspect ratio, or is carried by a satellite using the BSS frequency, or is a service started after the implementation date of this Directive, or makes use of a satellite first operative after this date. Services operating on 31 December 1991 using D- MAC, PAL or SECAM standards may so continue for 625-line 4:3 format after this date. Member States shall comply with the proposed Directive (to apply until December 2001) within three months of its notification.
