The European Parliament's Committee on research, technological development and energy (CRTDE) has produced a draft report, including a motion for a Resolution, on the Commission's Communication on Biotechnology and the White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment: Preparing the Next Stage. In the Committee's view, the Communication does not provide sufficient regulatory clarity for the European biotechnological industry, nor does it help to boost public confidence. The Committee in particular criticises: - The undemocratic procedures which led to the approval of the Communication by the Heads of State; - The unfounded assumptions on which the Communication is based; - The inappropriateness of the measures proposed for achieving competitiveness; - The lack of evidence supporting the Commission's arguments and the Commission's failure to take note of other contradictory evidence; - The Commission's failure to take sufficient account of social and environmental interests. The Committee concludes that implementation of the Communication would not be in the economic or public interests of the European Union and requests the Commission to re-examine its policy and reorient this along the lines of the proposals made by the Committee in its draft Resolution.
