On 18 July 1995, the European Union signed an agreement with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), continuing their cooperation in the energy sector through a three-year extension of the ASEAN/EU energy management training and research centre (AEEMTRC). The agreement was signed by Vice-President Manuel Marin, on behalf of the EU, and, for ASEAN, by the Ambassador of Thailand, H.E. Somkiati Ariyapruchya, who is currently Chairman of the ASEAN Brussels Committee. The centre was established in 1988, in Jakarta, in order to strengthen intra-ASEAN and EU-ASEAN cooperation in the energy sector and contribute to ensuring a secure energy supply for the economic and social development of ASEAN countries In line with the Community's new strategy towards Asia, the centre will provide a forum for high-level dialogue between Europe and ASEAN, in the area of energy policy. Phase II of the centre will include a comprehensive assessment of the ASEAN energy sector, through the establishment of a regional database on the present energy situation and a forecast of its evolution until 2020. It will also identify and launch EU-ASEAN cooperation activities for mutual benefit and the training of ASEAN personnel in energy policy and planning.
