Winds of change for seafood production

As Europe’s offshore renewable energy sector grows, so too does the potential for using low trophic aquaculture as a means of increasing seafood production.

As well as being a sustainable means of producing seafood, low trophic aquaculture (LTA) helps absorb excess nutrients and carbon from the ocean. Spotting an opportunity to marry Europe’s aquaculture and energy goals, the OLAMUR project is working to co-locate LTA farms within offshore wind farms to provide emission-free energy, nutritious seafood and restorative ecosystem services all from one site. The project is currently demonstrating commercial solutions for growing seaweed and blue mussels within three established wind farms in the North and Baltic Seas.
