Turning trash into treasure

A new biorefinery from the LIFE REFISH project converts discarded fish and waste into value-added raw materials.

Whether caught or cultivated, fish and seafood leave a mass of discarded fish and by-products in their wake. Where others see waste, LIFE REFISH saw an opportunity to make high value-added products. The project designed and demonstrated a biorefinery capable of processing an average of 300 kg of raw materials per hour. Over the course of the project, more than 45 tonnes of marine by-products and discards were processed. This material was converted into fish proteins, oils, gelatines, collagen, chitosan and mineral fractions – all of which can be used by the food, feed, cosmetic and agriculture sectors
