At the launch of the 1995 European Week Against Cancer, on 26 September 1995, Padraig Flynn, Commissioner responsible for social affairs and employment, stressed that "cancer is a major health scourge for the citizens of the European Community, one in four deaths in Europe being due to the disease". The European Week against Cancer, aimed at improving public knowledge about this disease and ways of preventing it, will be held in each Member State of the Community during the second week of October (9-13 October). The theme for this year's campaign will be the launch of the revised European Code Against Cancer which consists of a set of 10 simple recommendations on how to reduce the risk of some cancers and to improve the rate of cure for others. The code is addressed to the general public and includes a scientific annex giving the background and basis for each recommendation. The Code will be circulated across the Community through a series of posters, brochures and audio-visual materials developed for this year's campaign. In addition, an explanatory booklet on the European Code against Cancer will be distributed to general practitioners, providing them with a useful tool in their day-to-day prevention work with patients.
