On a proposal from Mrs. M. Wulf-Mathies, European Commissioner responsible for regional policy, the Commission has approved the Euregio Scheldemond INTERREG II programme for an area along the border between Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands. The total amount allocated under this programme amounts to ECU 22.8 million. The area covered by the programme comprises the whole province of Zeeland in The Netherlands and, in Flanders, the entire province of Oost-Vlaanderen and part of West-Vlaanderen (Brugge, Oostende, Tielt, Roeselare, Diksmuide and Kortrijk). The EU contribution to the programme will be approximately ECU 11.1 million of which the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will supply ECU 9.8 million and the European Social Fund (ESF) ECU 1.3 million. The national and regional authorities will supply ECU 9.4 million to the programme, while private funding is estimated at ECU 2.3 million. The strategy of the programme is to stimulate the socio-economic development of the region through better use of the economic, environmental and human resources. It includes the following specific measures: - Improving infrastructure; - Stimulating the economy, technology and innovation; - Protection of the environment; - Development and use of human potential; - Stimulating social integration; - Technical assistance.
