Action programme for renewable energies in the Mediterranean region
An action programme for renewable energies in the Mediterranean region was agreed during the International Conference on "Renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean basin" which was held in Athens, Greece, on 9-11 November 1995. Participants in the conference stressed the importance of the MEDA programme for the development of renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean region, due to be adopted by the European Union at the end of November 1995. Besides the environmental benefits to be gained, the implementation of the MEDA programme will also positively influence the economic situation of the area. The promotion of renewable energy sources is also expected to have a positive impact on the industry of northern regions of the European Union. The action programme agreed at the conference will be presented to the EU-Mediterranean Conference and Civil Forum EUROMED in Barcelona and to the energy governmental conference in Madrid.
