The European Commission, on the initiative of Mr. Christos Papoutsis, Commissioner responsible for energy policy, and Mr. Manuel Marin, Commissioner responsible for relations with Mediterranean countries, has adopted a communication aimed at setting up the basis for future partnerships between the European Union and Mediterranean countries in the energy sector. The communication, entitled "Euro-Mediterranean Partnership in the Energy Sector", puts forward a number of proposals, including: - Establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean Energy Forum for the joint management of energy cooperation through the creation of a framework for meetings and information exchanges between partners, and associated enterprises; - Commitment to begin consultations with the Mediterranean partners who are not members of the European Energy Charter, with a view to their possible participation as observers in the works of the Conference of the Charter; - Study of possible mechanisms to promote energy investments in the Mediterranean region; - Establishment of cooperation, with countries with Partnership Agreements, for the realization of trans-European energy networks' projects of common interest.
