The European Commission has decided to authorize a French aid package of FF 15 million, allocated to "Charbonnages de France" in 1994. The aid was awarded to support the R&D efforts of the French coal industry and was aimed primarily at helping to: - Improve performance in face workings and drivages; - Improve safety and working conditions, especially research activities in the ergonomic field, ventilation and fire damp safety; - Extend remote control, monitoring and data transmission methods - Protect the environment. Other projects which will benefit from the grant relate to the behaviour of coal, ash upgrading, gaseous pollutants analysis and fluidized bed combustion. In determining whether to approve the aid package, the Commission ensured that the aid respected the Community rules on State aid for research and development.
