Telematics Applications programme: Education and Training projects
In December 1994, the European Commission, DG XIII, published its first call for proposals for the specific RTD programme in the field of telematics applications of common interest (1994-1998). As a result of this call, a total of 31 projects were selected for funding under the Education and Training sector of the programme. An overview of these projects, which represent a total EU contribution of ECU 47 million, is given in a report recently published by DG XIII. Almost all the projects started on 1 January 1996 and the majority will run for a period of two years. The 31 projects cover all tasks of the Education and Training work programme with the exception of Task 1.7 (Telematics services for language learning) and Tasks 3.1 - 3.3 (Education and training support actions). These will be covered by a second call for proposals, published in September 1995, for which the results are not yet available. The 31 projects selected are as follows: - AQUARIUS: Aquatic research institutions for development of user friendly applications in telematics; - ARIADNE: Alliance of remote instructional authoring and development networks for Europe; - BIC: Blueprint for interactive classrooms; - CL4K: Cyberspace learning for kids; - COAST: Courseware authoring for scientific training; - COINS: Corporate organizations interactive network systems; - DEMOS: Distance education and tutoring in heterogeneous telematics environments; - DOMITEL: Domestic interactive telematic education and learning; - EETP: European educational teleports; - ELECTRA: Electronic learning environment for continual training and research in ALMA; - EUROMET: European meteorological education and training; - IDEALS: Integration of DEDICATED for advanced training linked to small and medium-sized enterprises and institutes of higher education; - KAMP: knowledge assurance in multimedia publishing; - LINES: Learning and information support networks in Europe for SOCRATES; - MODEM: Multimedia optimization and demonstration for education in microelectronics; - POLLEN: Publishers on information highways; - PRONET: Multimedia computer-based online training and support service for professionals; - REM: Reseau d'enseignement multimedia (Multimedia teaching network); - SAFETY-NET: Safety critical industries workplace learning telematic network; - SERVIVE: Service for integrated virtual environments; - TECAR: Training network for the European car industry; - TEN: Trans-European tele-education network; - TOPILOT: To optimize the individual learning process of occupational travellers; - TRENDS: Training educators through networks and distributed systems; Seven projects are managed by the Education and Training sector but funded under the Telematics Applications support actions budget. These are: - AGORA: Teleservices for small and medium-sized organizations - a network of networks; - DEPLOY: European consortium aiming to form a bridge between Telematics Applications projects and the Information Society; - ETUENET: European trade union education network; - LABORTEL: Latin America business opportunities research for Telematics Applications programme; - STACCIS: Support for Telematics Applications cooperation with the Commonwealth of Independent States; - T3: Telematics for teacher training; - TRANSMETE: Seminars for training SMEs in the use of telematics.
