The European Commission, DG XVII, has published a review of clean coal technologies supported by the European Community. The review, which follows an initial report on the same subject published in 1992, is entitled "Coal can be Green II". It was carried out by the ETM Consortium (member of the OPET network) on behalf of the Community's THERMIE programme for the promotion of energy technology. The continuing need for coal makes it imperative to offset the environmentally adverse effects of coal's use as an energy source, particularly since coal-fired power stations currently produce 40% of the EU's electricity. "Coal can be Green II" demonstrates how, with the help of the EU, coal is becoming a more environmentally friendly energy option. The review provides an update on the current status of Community-supported research on coal as an environmentally credible energy option, highlighting the further, significant advances made since the publication of "Coal can be Green (1)".
