A conference entitled "How to finance energy projects in the Mediterranean region" was held in Cairo, Egypt, on 2-3 October 1995. The conference, organized under the Community's SYNERGY programme for international cooperation in the field of energy, is a follow-up to the earlier Tunis Conference on Euro-Mediterranean Energy Cooperation (27-28 March 1995) and the Athens Workshop on Euro-Mediterranean Energy Partnership (6-7 July 1995). The aim of these conference meetings is to maintain a permanent dialogue between the political, economic and financial institutions involved in the Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation process in order to develop consistent energy policies and launch priority actions in the energy field. The Cairo Conference will review the financing needs of the Mediterranean region in relation to energy projects, in particular with regard to infrastructure, and discuss present and prospective financing instruments. The conclusions of the conference are expected to provide a clear message from industry and the banking sector to next year's Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference in Barcelona, making energy a priority theme of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership in the coming years.
