The European Commission, DG XII, has published a second call for proposals for RTD actions under the specific programme for research and technological development, including demonstration, in the field of marine science and technology (1994-1998) (MAST III). The research, technological development and demonstration activities covered by this call for proposals relate to the following areas described in the MAST III work programme: - Research Area A: Marine Science: . A.1. Marine Systems Research: . A.1.1. Mechanisms of the circulation and exchange of water masses; . A.1.2. Practical and theoretical integrated ecosystems studies to model and define the resilience of pelagic and benthic ecosystems of marginal seas and ocean basins; . A.1.3. Studies on marine biodiversity as a basis for understanding ecosystem structure, dynamics and resilience; . A.1.4. Processes and fluxes across the air/sea interface in order to understand biogeochemical cycles; . A.1.5. Flux of heat and organic and inorganic matter across the water/sediment interface (including hydrothermal vents and cold seeps in shelf seas); . A.1.6. Sedimentary processes in the deep sea, on the continental slope and at the shelf edge; . A.2. Extreme Marine Environments: . A.2.1. The deep sea floor in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean; . A.2.2. The ice-covered seas in the northern hemisphere (Arctic and sub-Arctic seas); . A.2.3. The surf and swash zone of European coasts; . A.3. Regional Seas Research: . A.3.4. The North-eastern Atlantic continental margin; - Research Area B: Strategic Marine Research: . B.1. Coastal and Shelf Seas Research: . B.1.1. Coastal processes and morphodynamics; . B.1.2. Structure and dynamics of shelf ecosystems; . B.1.3. Methods for monitoring, forecasting and management of shelf seas and coastal zones; . B.2. Coastal Engineering and Natural Defences: . B.2.1. Coastal structures; . B.2.2. Remote sensing; - Research Area C: Marine Technology: . C.1. Generic Technologies: . C.1.1. Non-disturbing techniques; . C.1.2. Underwater communication and orientation; . C.1.3. Underwater viewing; . C.1.4. Exploitation of marine biological resources other than fisheries and aquaculture; . C.1.5. Submarine geotechnics; . C.2. Advanced Systems: . C.2.1. Unmanned platforms and autonomous systems; . C.2.2. Oceanographic measurement and sampling equipment; . C.2.3. Biosensor; - Other: Dissemination and exploitation of results of MAST II and MAST III projects, including demonstration projects. The research and technological development work will, as a general rule, be carried out as shared-cost projects and concerted actions, in accordance with the implementing rules of the programme. In addition, certain measures will be carried out as preparatory, accompanying and support measures. In order to facilitate participation of organizations from Central and Eastern European countries, the countries of the former Soviet Union, and from developing countries, Community financial support can be made available. Details of third country participation possibilities are contained in the information package. The work programme, the information package (1996 edition) concerning the procedures to be followed for the submission of proposals, a guide for applicants focusing on the priorities of this call and a copy of the model contract to be drawn up for the proposals accepted are available on written request (facsimile accepted) from the Commission's services. Descriptions of work undertaken in earlier related programmes are also available on request. Proposals for RTD actions, and requests for further information, should be sent, or hand delivered, to: European Commission DG XII - Science, research and development Division XII/D-3 MAST-III/RTD (SDME 7/78) 8 Square de Meeus B-1050 Brussels Fax +32-2-2963024 Proposals received by facsimile will not be admissible.
