Following the second call for proposals in the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of telematics applications on 15 March 1995, the European Commission, DG XIII, has selected nine pilot projects in the information engineering sector. The pilot projects, which began in early 1996 and will run for three years, are grouped into the three main stages in the information chain, namely electronic publishing, information dissemination, and information retrieval. The projects focus on the development and testing of advanced electronic information projects and services, and corporate information resource systems. They are expected to use existing products and facilities as far as possible, and to transfer results from other national and European programmes (such as ESPRIT and the language engineering sector of the Telematics Applications programme) into the working environment of information engineering. The pilot projects address the following areas: - Multimedia access to cultural information; - Geographical mediation systems; - Publication of electronic multimedia materials; - Multimedia interactive catalogues; - Information systems for working and training; - Multimedia local newspapers; - Multimedia brokering; - Multimedia in industrial design; - Efficient usage of remote and online publication.
