Commission provides ECU 118 million for energy efficiency in Spain
In order to improve energy efficiency and promote renewable forms of energy, the European Commission has decided to provide Spain with a global grant of ECU 118.335 million from the European Regional Development Fund. The funds will go to areas of Spain which are lagging behind in their development (eligible under Objective 1 of the Community's Structural Funds), in particular Andalusia, Asturia, Castile-Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Ceuta and Melilla, Community of Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, Canary Islands, and Murcia. Implementation of this funding will be the responsibility of the "Instituto para la diversificacion y el ahorro energetico" (IDAE), a central-government public body coming under the Ministry of Energy. The aid programme will run until the end of 1999. It is broken down into two parts: infrastructure in support of commercial activities, including energy supply and protection/improvement of the environment, and technical assistance.
