The European Commission, DG XI, has published an open call to tender for a study contract in the field of nuclear safety.

The study would provide a detailed review of the current situation concerning radioactive waste management and restoration of contaminated territories in and around the "Mayak" site (i.e. the "Mayak" facility, the cascades of lakes along the Techa River, and the contaminated flood-lands). It will also include identification of safety aspects deserving particular attention, and definition of a possible optimized management scheme.

This action is in line with the Council Resolution of 18 June 1992 on the technological problems of nuclear safety (OJ No C 172 of 8.7.1992 p. 2).

The study must be completed within 18 months from the date of signature of the contract.
