On a proposal from Mrs. Edith Cresson, Commissioner for research policy, the Council of EU Ministers has decided to renew the High Flux Reactor (HFR) programme of the Joint Research Centre for the period 1996 to 1999. The HFR at Petten, in The Netherlands, provides some 60% of radioisotopes produced in Europe, which are used in the treatment of seven million cancer patients. The HFR programme is a supplementary research programme, partly funded by France, Germany and The Netherlands, with the remainder coming from the pharmaceuticals industry. For 1996-1999, the contributions from these three Member States will amount to ECU 40 million, with a similar amount coming from the pharmaceuticals industry.
