The European Commission, DG X, has launched an open call to tender for initiatives to promote the 16/9 television format. The 16/9 Action Plan (Council Decision 93/424/EEC) aims at promoting the 16/9 television format. It provides the European audiovisual sector with ECU 228 million in aid over a four-year period (from 1 July 1993), divided into two parts: - Part 1: aid for the broadcasting and distribution of programmes in the 16/9 format; - Part 2: aid for the production of programmes in the 16/9 format. In support of this project, the Commission seeks the services of an independent organization capable of putting forward and carrying out initiatives in favour of the 16/9 television format, on a shared-cost basis (50% minimum), and in association with European operators in the sector. These actions will take place during the first half of 1997, though the preparation of these must commence in the last quarter of 1996. They will cover, in particular: - The organization of a European information conference; - The participation in a minimum of three large-scale events to be convened, and in forms yet to be decided upon. Requests for tender specifications, and completed tenders, should be sent to: European Commission DG X - Audiovisual media, information, communication and culture Mr. Costas Daskalakis 16/9 Action Plan 200 rue de la Loi (L-102 6/25) B-1049 Brussels Tel. +32-2-2963596; Fax +32-2-2966992
