The European Commission has announced the successful conclusion of the IMPACT II programme's geographic information project initiative. Launched in November 1992, 28 projects were supported for six months in a definition phase, where ideas and prototypes were tested. Eight of the 28 projects were then selected for a further 18 months' implementation phase, involving over 40 organizations from different EU Member States. The eight projects developed products for release in 1996. The projects explored the use of geographic information systems (GIS) technology across a range of applications in business, commerce, industry and education. They used CD-ROM as their major platform, with many complementing this with World Wide Web and other online options. The eight projects are as follows: - ENVIDUCA: Multimedia GIS for elementary environmental education; - ERGIS: European marine resource GIS; - EURIPIDES: European information project involving demographic and economic statistics; - EXPLORER: Space explorer; - MAGIS: Map-supported area information service based on GIS; - OMEGA: Object metadata for European geographic analysis; - TITAN: Tourist information and travel assistance network; - VITAL: Visitors' information on transport and location.
