The European Commission has approved a grant of ECU 63 million under the INTERREG Community initiative for seven cross-border cooperation programmes involving Finland and Sweden, Norway, Russia and Estonia. These are the first INTERREG programmes involving Russia and Estonia, where there will be the possibility of linking them with projects funded under the TACIS and PHARE aid programmes for the New Independent States and Central and East European countries. The programmes will improve living conditions, promote economic and social development and facilitate cross-border trade and industry in the following areas: Karelia (Finland and Russia); Barents (Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia); North Callote Region (Finland, Sweden and Norway); Kvarken-Mittskandia (Finland, Sweden and Norway); Swedish/Finnish islands; South-east Finland (Finland and Russia); South Finland coastal zone (Finland and Estonia).
