As part of European activities in support of the G-7 Information Society pilot project "A global market place for small and medium sized enterprises" (1995-1998), the European Commission organized, in April 1996, an "Electronic Commerce Workshop". At the workshop, over 150 experts in electronic commerce from all over Europe held in-depth discussions on a wide variety of issues relating to electronic commerce. The report of this workshop is now available. This provides an overview of the workshop discussions which were divided into sessions covering the following subject areas relating to electronic commerce: - Information networks; - Globalization and deployment; - The legal and regulatory framework; - Interoperability; - Financial issues; - Pilot projects/testbeds. In order, to speed up the process of creating an electronic commerce infrastructure, the participants provided a number of recommendations to the European Commission and the governments of the Member States. They also set up a series of electronic discussion forums and agreed to sign memoranda for specific actions, particularly in the areas of interoperability, education and training and the role of intermediaries.
