Radiation protection - synopsis of research results
The European Commission, DG XII, has recently published a synopsis of research results from the Community's research and training programme in the field of radiation protection. The synopsis covers the results of work carried out under the Nuclear Fission Safety programme during the period 1990-1995, and under the APAS-COSU Chernobyl research programme during the period 1991-1996. In addition to detailing the results obtained from research carried out under these programmes, the synopsis includes a list of relevant publications from the period, and also discusses results expected under the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. The review of the research results is broken down into the sectors which defined the programme: - Human exposure to radiation and radioactivity, including: . Measurement of radiation dose and its interpretation; . Transfer and behaviour of radionuclides in the environment; - Consequences of radiation exposure to man, including: . Stochastic effects of radiation; . Non-stochastic (deterministic) effects of radiation; . Radiation effects on the developing organism; - Risk and management of radiation exposure, including: . Assessment of human exposure and risks; . Optimization and management of radiation protection; - Education and training in radiation protection.
