The European Commission has established ecological criteria for refrigerators, freezers and combination fridge/freezers. This is a new category of products which are now covered by the Community's Eco-label award scheme. The criteria relate to the products' energy efficiency and the environmental characteristics of the substances used as refrigerants and foaming agents. The criteria also limit the noise emission of the products, except for chest freezers, and require the noise level of the appliance to be indicated at the point of sale. The Commission will publish a detailed outline of the Eco-label criteria for refrigerators in the Official Journal of the European Communities.
