A Commission Decision setting out revised ecological criteria for the award of the Community Eco-label to soil improvers has recently been published in the Official Journal. This revises the criteria established by Decision 94/923/EC which expired on 14 November 1997. The product group covers gardening materials which are added to the soil to improve its physical or biological condition without causing harmful effects. The criteria to be met for the award are annexed to the Decision and aim to promote: - The use and/or re-use of organic matter derived from the collection and/or processing of waste materials, contributing to the minimisation of solid waste; - The reduction of environmental damage or risks from heavy metals and nutrients in products to be marketed and applied as soil improvers. The criteria established will be valid from 1 April 1998 until 31 March 2001.
