The European Commission has decided to approve an aid scheme in favour of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in difficulties in East Germany. The scheme foresees aid given in the form of extensions of loans and guarantees, waiver of loans and, exceptionally, granting of new loans or outright grants. Amounts up to DM 3 million per beneficiary may be made available. The aid will be allocated within the so-called "Vertragsmanagement" activity of the "Bundesanstalt für Vereiningungsbedingte Sonderaufgaben" (BvS) and the "Beteiligungs- und Management Gesellschaft Berlin" (BMGB). Between 150 and 200 companies are expected to benefit from this scheme each year until the end of the year 2000.
