The German DLR, the French INSU/CNRS, and the UK Meteorological Office have been funded by the European Commission, through the TMR (Training and Mobility of Researchers) Programme, to offer, to other European teams, free access to their airborne facilities (DLR-Falcon, INSU-ARAT/Fokker-27, Met Office-C-130). The objective of STAAARTE (Scientific Training and Access to Aircraft for Atmospheric Research Throughout Europe) is to allow other teams in Europe, who do not have experience in running an aircraft campaign with one of the three aircraft, to: - Receive training; - Perform some limited research; - Gain an appreciation of the potential of atmospheric research aircraft. Funding by the European Commission will allow about three campaigns per year on each facility over a three-year period (1996-1999). Each campaign will be free of charge for the selected projects. This will include travel for one preparatory meeting, travel and accommodation for one or two scientists during a campaign, research aircraft flight hours and one post-campaign meeting. This second "Announcement of Opportunity" to participate in STAAARTE is being issued for the period from September 1997 to the end of 1998. The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 May 1997. The Allocation Committee will meet in mid-June in order to select projects eligible for participation. The final decision will be given to the investigators at the end of July 1997, with the first campaigns expected to start during the last few months of 1997.
