Among the initiatives of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH) has been the creation of industrial platforms in a number of key biotechnological sectors. These platforms, whose members are companies (or umbrella organizations of companies) active in biotechnological research in the sector concerned, aim to improve the links between fundamental research and commercial applications. The industrial platforms allow industry to present coherent views, and recommendations on policy, to the Commission on the development and implementation of the BIOTECH programme. The success of these industrial platforms is demonstrated by the increasing industrial participation in the BIOTECH programme. The ten industrial platforms represent the following biotechnological sectors: - Animal cell technology; - Lactic acid bacteria; - Yeast industry; - Plant industry; - In vitro testing; - Bacillus subtilis genome; - Farm animals; - Microbiology; - Structural biology; - Biotechnology for biodiversity.
