The Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH) has initiated the creation of a number of industrial platforms in key biotechnological sectors. One of these is the In Vitro Testing Industrial Platform (IVTIP), which has just published a leaflet describing the platform's activities and objectives and listing its members. Founded in December 1993, IVTIP is an open forum comprised of representatives from a broad cross section of European pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetic companies, as well as independent contract research organizations with an interest in "in vitro" testing. The stated objectives of IVTIP are: - To advise the European Commission on industrial requirements for current and future research projects in "in vitro" testing; - To optimize the output from EU-funded research projects by working in partnership with the research workers, providing advice and information; - To encourage the further development, validation and regulatory acceptance of tests based on this research. IVTIP meets once a year to review progress in research and to make recommendations for future research projects. Between meetings communication remains open through an active secretariat. By becoming a member of IVTIP you can help encourage an increase in EU-funded research projects in "in vitro" testing. At the same time, you will be part of an open communication channel, receiving the latest information from industry, the EU, research workers and regulators. The more companies that join, the wider the representation and the broader the interest base.
