The annual report for 1995-1996 of the nuclear fusion research project, undertaken by the Karlsruhe Research Centre (FZK), in Germany, has recently been published. The Karlsruhe fusion research project supports the Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion research programme of the EURATOM Framework Programme, and was launched in 1982 under an association agreement with the Commission. The annual report details the activities carried out during the year, and achievements from the research conducted. The work of the FZK falls into two categories. Firstly, a large part of the work is in support of the "Next Step Technology" programme, which has the aim of establishing the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER), a joint project involving the EC, the USA and Japan. Around 50% of FZK's activities are now contracted to ITER. The remaining work done by FZK is part of its long-term technology programme. Work done in this area includes the blanket development programme, the materials programme, neutron source research, the nuclear database and the safety and environmental assessment programme.
