The European Commission, DG XII, will launch a second call for proposals under the INCO-COPERNICUS programme (Cooperation with the countries of Central Europe (CCE) and with the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS)) on 15 April 1997. The closing date for the call will be 26 September 1997. Following the INCO-COPERNICUS informal consultation of August 1996, and the advice from EU Member States and representatives from the CCE/NIS, the topics to be included in this call are expected to be as follows: - 1. Environmental protection: . Sustainable management of forestry resources; . Sustainable water management; . Sustainable soil management; - 2. Environmental and health consequences of ionising radiation: . Environment; . Health; - 3. Health research activities: . Research in health care systems; . Advanced diagnostics and prognostics in epidemiology; - 4. Non-nuclear energy (demonstration projects): . Demonstration projects implementing innovative and efficient energy technologies in the renewable energy sector (RES); - 5. Non-nuclear energy (research projects): . Clean use of fossil fuels in buildings, transport and industry; - Coal and lignites: combustion and gasification processes; - 6. Advanced Communications (ACTS) and Telematics Applications: . Accompanying measures which contribute to the creation of the Global Information Society in the CCE/NIS related to successful projects and actions in the framework of the INCO-COPERNICUS, ACTS or Telematics Applications programmes (Proposals should follow the objectives of the Action Plan); - 7. Information technologies (ESPRIT): . Information technology related to the Information Society, with emphasis on research-oriented actions as defined in the Action Plan of the "1996 CEE/EU FORUM" on the Information Society (research topics are multimedia networks, multilingualism tools, geographical information systems, research networks); - 8. Industrial Technologies and Materials research (BRITE/EURAM): . Limited to concerted actions fostering the application of clean technologies (research - industry networks); - 9. Agro-food and food technology (including food safety): . Development of new technologies and optimizing existing processes leading to safe, high quality food; . Use of natural products and systems for food preservation, including natural food additives; - 10. Social Sciences: . Research projects to study the factors and strategies for innovation and modernization of industries; . Research contributing to policies on illicit drugs in relation with CCE/NIS. Immediately following the publication of the call for proposals in the Official Journal (15 April 1997), the Information Package (including application form) will be available on the World Wide Web.
