Software tool for electromagnetic compatibility design

Problems with electromagnetic interference between devices in complex circuits are a major drawback, requiring serious consideration during the design of a new product. A consortium consisting of aerospace and automobile industries as well as software developers, have closely collaborated to produce an innovative tool and technique for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design using simulation on parallel computers. The developed tool will be immediately and directly exploited by the project partners and will also be marketed to industry.

In order for the European aeronautics and car industries to remain competitive in a fierce international market and to withstand competition from both US and Japanese industries, they have to design and produce better, safer and cheaper products. The EMCP2 project, Electronic Compatibility using Parallel Parameterisation, has developed a software tool capable of substantially improving the quality of EMC designs. Such improvement immediately results in reduced costs of development, shorter time to market and safer end products, namely aircrafts, cars and helicopters. The software developed is an optimisation tool that allows interactive simulation on Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems, which are being used during the initial design of a product. The software will aid electromagnetic compatability specialists to directly solve design problems and interactively obtain an optimal design. The EMCP2 suite consists of two complementary products, the finite element parallel solver for producing a parameterised solution to specific EMC design problems and the EMCP2 workstation environment. The workstation environment consists of an interface between the CAD systems and the solver and a number of optimization tools like meshing, post-processing and graphic representation. The technique and tool were developed for application in particular industrial sectors, namely for the design and production of cars and aircrafts. The software has already been extensively tested and the validity of the technique has been established through a number of simulation tests and comparisons. Since some of the project partners involved in the development of the tool are aircraft and automobile industries, the software was immediately commercially exploited after its production. Its potential for improving the quality of EMC designs was therefore clearly demonstrated. Apart from direct exploitation by the partners the software tool will also be marketed by the French aerospace industry, Aerospatiale.
