The European Commission, DG XII, has recently published a brochure which gives an overview of the eight research-industry task forces. These task forces were established to improve coordination between different Community research programmes, with the aim of focusing research efforts on a number of key areas. The first of the task forces were established in March 1995, with others set up later that year. Each of the task forces conducted a wide consultation process, seeking the views of relevant industries and user groups. Following the consultation periods, the task forces each established a small number of priority research areas for work within the current Fourth Framework Programme. The brochure discusses the aims of establishing the task forces, and then summarizes, for each task force, the achievements so far and the priorities identified for future research. The eight task forces cover the following areas: - New generation aircraft; - Educational software and multimedia; - Car of tomorrow; - Transport intermodality; - Environment - water; - Vaccines and viral diseases; - Trains and railway systems of the future; - Maritime systems of the future.
