Optimised detector for eV neutrons

An EC funded project developed a novel high efficient detector for neutrons at eV energies that may provide an overall almost twofold increase in count rate.

Common He gas counter technology may run inefficiently when used for neutron detection at high eV energies. In addition, these neutron counters provide unsatisfactory results when extremely fast and large count rates are required. In order to cover both needs, this project built a new high-efficiency detector that displays unique capabilities. More specifically, the newly constructed detector features increased neutron absorption and almost double neutron count rates. The structure of the new detector consists of a detector bank being at the centre of the incoming beam and includes Li doped scintillator glass. These scintillator elements are arranged within 60° segments for matching energy analysis purposes and specialised photo-multiplier tubes detect scintillations as light pulses. Due to the extremely high instantaneous neutron count rates generated, suitable electronic modules have been included to resolve problems related with saturation of the data acquisition system. This neutron detector is expected to significantly contribute to more reliable and accurate measurements related with eV neutron interaction with condensed matter. This research field may find interesting applications in various areas ranging from the study of advanced materials, such as polymers to a better understanding of bio-molecular processes.
